Lincoln, the state's capital and second-largest city, is midway between Omaha and Denver in eastern Nebraska on I-80. It was established as a trading post for trappers in 1856. At the end of the nineteenth century, 30,000 people were living in Lincoln.
Today, Lincoln is a thriving metropolis of 280,000 people. It is home to the state's major institutions of higher learning and a fast-growing technology sector. The University of Nebraska at Lincoln (UNL) and the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) alone account for around one-fifth of the city's population.
The state capital, Lincoln, is home to the state capitol as well. It was built after the US Capitol and completed in 1932.
Places to Visit
Lincoln has the second-largest parkland per capita in the country and more parks than Austin, Portland, and almost every other city in the United States. Lincoln is one of the Midwest's fastest-growing metros, with more jobs (and increasing) than any other midwestern city outside of Chicago.
With over 200 parks, Lincoln has five city golf courses, two minigolf courses, three skate parks, seven off-leash dog parks, nine pools (including the Lied Aquatic Center), four recreation centers, and eight public, and sixteen outdoor tennis courts. In addition to thirteen indoor ice rinks.
You may go to the old Memorial Stadium (29,000 capacity), where Johnny Rodgers won the Heisman in 1972 and hosted three national title teams.
The Pinnacle Bank Arena, home to the UNL Wildcats basketball team and other events, is another option. The arena has an aluminum-paneled exterior that's even better in person.
